9 Grocery Stores With Senior Discounts

Everybody needs groceries, so why not utilize any discounts you can? That’s especially important now that the costs of certain foods are hitting all-time highs. So don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for a senior discount, if you qualify and your store offers such a deal.

Here’s a look at several grocery stores that offer shoppers a senior discount. Note that some of them aren’t national chains, so you may not have locations in your area. And if your local store’s not mentioned here, you may want to follow them on social media – some markets offer a senior discount a few times a year, but not regularly. (Kroger recently hosted a one-day senior discount deal at all of its 119 Michigan stores.)

While you’re cutting costs at the market, check out these easy, but often forgotten ways to save on groceries, plus make a note of these tips on how to save when you’re shopping for just one person.

Midwestern shoppers likely are familiar with Hy-Vee. The chain has more than 280 retail stores in eight states, including Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Some of these Hy-Vee locations offers a senior discount to those who are 55 and older, but you’ll need to check with your local store for the day and percentage offered.

North Carolina-based Harris Teeter has more than 250 stores and 60 fuel centers in seven South Atlantic states (North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Delaware and Maryland) plus the District of Columbia.

If you’re 60 or older, just show your rewards card, called a VIC card, for a 5% discount on Thursdays. The discount doesn’t apply to fuel, pharmacy, tickets and gift cards, and it kicks in after all coupons and VIC discounts have been deducted.

Mid-Atlantic shoppers can get a senior discount at Weis Markets, a chain of nearly 200 stores with locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia and Delaware. Shoppers aged 60 and over save 10% on Tuesdays on participating Weis brand products.

Brookshire’s began with one small store that opened in Tyler, Texas, in 1928. Now, the company has more than 200 stores in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma, operating under the brands Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market, FRESH by Brookshire’s and Reasor’s. And good news for shoppers who are 60 and over: They have two discount days. Those shoppers get 5% off most items every Tuesday and Thursday.

Fred Meyer, or Freddy’s to its longtime shoppers, has stores in the Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. It sells everything from soup to school supplies and sectional sofas to shoes.

Shoppers aged 55 and over enjoy a 10% discount on many items on the first Tuesday of each month. Those items include private brand groceries and nutrition products; apparel, shoes and accessories; most electronics; and all home items – including toys, sporting goods, and auto and garden items.

Tops Friendly Markets was founded in Niagara Falls, New York, in 1962, and the chain now has nearly 150 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.

Shoppers 60 and older receive money-saving specials on the first Tuesday of each month. The deals include a 6% discount off shoppers’ total grocery and out-of-pocket prescription purchase. Shoppers must sign up at the customer-service desk or at Tops pharmacy.

New Seasons Markets operate in the Portland, Oregon, metro area, southwestern Washington and Northern California. The stores offer a number of organic and Pacific Northwest-produced foods, as well as conventional groceries. And shoppers 65 and older should mark their calendars to shop on Wednesdays, when they’ll receive 10% off most items.

Fry’s Food Stores has over 125 locations in sunny Arizona, a state beloved by many retirees. So it makes sense that the chain offers a senior discount. On the first Wednesday of each month, shoppers aged 55 and over can take an additional 10% off most items.

New Yorkers know the Gristedes name – its first store opened in Manhattan way back in 1888. Today, the chain operates over 30 stores throughout Manhattan, Westchester and Brooklyn, plus a store on Roosevelt Island. Shoppers aged 65 and up enjoy 10% off their purchases every Tuesday.
